To be fair, I don’t know nearly enough about the Palm Pre to write a review, or for that matter, to claim that it’s better than iPhone.
I can tell you that it provides true multi-tasking (several apps running at once), that it has a very cool, Apple-like interface for that functionality (the “deck of cards” metaphor), that Apple has stated in the past that they’d like to avoid multi-tasking because of the enormous drain on the battery it causes (the Pre has already been criticized for requiring a charge at least once a day), and that despite it coming out only a couple of days ago, the guy sitting next to me on the train this morning was actively using one as an MP3 player and an e-mail/SMS device.
My impressions, based on what I’ve read, is that it won’t dethrone the iPhone at all, but it will raise the bar for Apple, in that it’s no longer cool enough just to have something that runs on the iPhone. With at least one other real competitor out there (and more to come, I’m sure), Apple and their app developers are going to have to hit the ball harder to get it over the fence now.
