About the Blog

The thoughts and theories of a guy who basically should have gone to bed hours ago.

I know, I know - what's the point? But look at it this way - I stayed up late writing it, but you're reading it...

Let's call ourselves even & move on, OK?

30 Rock - Starring Tina Fey, Jane Krakowski, and ME!

As attentive readers already know, I work at 50 Rockefeller Plaza, which is right next to NBC's New York headquarters, at 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Which, of course, is the namesake of the new sitcom, 30 Rock.

So, a couple of months back (before the show had aired), I'm walking into work one morning, and I see a film crew filming a television show. Tina Fey was there, and while I recognized her face right away, I couldn't place the name until I saw some film equipment with the "30 Rock" label on it. Jane Krakowski was there too, but she's much thinner (and more blonde) than she was on Ally McBeal, so I had no chance to recognize her. Anyway, I watched the taping for a while, and then headed into the office.

Fast forward to this past Thursday night. I'm watching 30 Rock (my wife and I are fans now), and I recognize the scene I saw filmed as the opening of the show. Knowing where I was & what they were doing at the time, I was able to pick myself out of the crowd. To wit:

Yup, there we are. Tina, Jane and I in our first scene together. I know Tina & Jane are the stars of the show & all, but I don't think they got my good side. The things us supporting actors put up with...

  • Funny, we watched on tape last night I told Hilary, "Hey, Brian works right ... there." We'll check the videotape again to see if we can pick you out.

  • Well, the picture above should be a big hint... ;-)

  • Yep, though I guess we were looking for a shot that was maybe a bit more, um, conclusive. :) Maybe we can start a campaign to have you make recurring cameos, like Rachel Dratch...

  • Sorry - that's as conclusive as there is. I watched the taping for a while, but when they started walking off to 30 Rock, I went into the office. I guess I should have turned around & waved. Then again, if I did that, they probably wouldn't have used it.

As for Rachel Dratch, what a bum deal, huh? She quits SNL to co-create the show with Tina Fey, then they pull her from the cast, don't even give her "Created By" credits anymore, and now she's relegated to performing roles like the "insane Liz Taylor" which keeps her in the shadows so you can barely see her face.

    Can anyone say "focus group?"

  • Hey, Brian, congratulations on your moment of celebrity! I'm sure working in NY, you must bump into film crews fairly often... believe it or not, it happens here in my sleepy little Salt Lake, too. I'm planning to see the upcoming kiddie-flick "Unaccompanied Minors" -- which I fully expect to suck -- just because I wandered through a shoot one day when I dropped into the Salt Lake City Main Library (it has this big glassed-in atrium which was doubling for an airport terminal).

  • When did you start wearing a fedora?

  • That's not a fedora, that's my HEAD. If you go to NBC.com and watch the video, it's a little clearer (but not much...)
