Some Template Updates

I’ve been playing around with the template here at Familygreenberg.com. And is often the case when I do that, I call upon my small but loyal group of regular readers to throw some feedback my way. Here’s what I think I’ve done. Please tell me if you see anything differently on your end:
- Header Image: Inspired by Jeff Porten‘s “images of things in his life” and Ilya Burlak‘s “horizontal image that doesn’t take up a lot of space on the page” styles, I give you the new Familygreenberg.com header image!

There seems to be a problem with the image justification, though. When I looked at the post you linked, the books appear on the sides they’re supposed to, but there’s a huge chunk of white space separating the Eat, Pray, Love section from the Drink, Play, F*&K section. I thought at first that the entry hadn’t entirely loaded, then realized I needed to scroll down.
I’m using Firefox for my browser, if that helps any…
I love the header image.
I do not particularly like the entire family of fonts to which Georgia belongs, but that’s nothing but a personal idiosyncrasy.
Other comments:
Like the new banner — and man, aren’t those a bitch? I originally had pretensions that I would rotate my photos, but like fun is that going to happen.
Recommend that you change the name of the picture; on my first load, the cloud picture was cached. Might be a persistent problem for people still coming in through the index1 page.
Not sure that you need the post title in the upper-left; that’s not a normal UI place to put something that’s page-related rather than site-related. And it covers up the Brian picture, which is a bit of burying the lede IMO.
The font in the comments box is making my eyes bleed; way too small on a Mac. Brian, will send you pic separately. Actually not a problem for me as my posts are usually so long that I do them in a text editor, but still….
1) Header Image
Glad to hear it’s a hit. Jeff – I assume you mean upper-right, not upper-left. I know it’s not necessary, but I kind of like the way it frames the page. Also, I put it over my own head because that’s the darkest area of the picture, so it’s the most readable. My face isn’t the highlight around here anyway…
As for difficulty, actually it was quite simple. I created a blank Photoshop image that was 900×100, then loaded up all the pictures I wanted to use and either cropped them, or just changed their height to 100 (letting Photoshop auto-adjust their width), then cut & paste onto the blank image. After that, I blurred the lines between the images, and overlaid a solid blue layer (Opacity 30%) to bring some consistency across the banner in terms of both color and brightness. Changing the pictures would be (and will be) a snap…
2) Font
Ilya – I’m not married to Georgia, but I was a little tired of the Veranda family. I’m up for any suggestions – obviously, it’s an easy thing to change & makes a big difference. I don’t have that many guests around here, so I’m happy to make those that I have comfortable…
3) Font Size in the comments box.
I honestly never even thought about it until you mentioned it. Fixing it was a bit of a pain, but I’ve got it now (at least on my screen). It should be the same font (and size) as the rest of the site now. Yes? No?
Not that I’m lobbying for shorter comments, of course. ;-)
4) Image justification
Here’s the CSS style definition I’m using for left:

Can anyone venture a guess as to why Firefox doesn’t like it? Does it not recognize the float attribute? I thought that was standard…
