Yankee Stadium Blogging…

By Brian | June 10, 2007 | Share on Facebook

Reporting live from Yankee Stadium…It’s Bat Day today in the Bronx.

The game started at 1:05. It is currently 1:30, and there are already 3 bats available for sale on eBay.

I have two (one for each kid), and on my way to my seat, someone offered me $200 for one of them. He obviously doesn’t understand the need to have two of anything when you have two children…

Ok, for those of us who are obviously missing something: what does a bat normally cost, and what makes your Yankees bats different?

Well, the cost of a regular bat would vary widely by the quality. A bat you’d buy in a sporting goods store might run you $10 or $20. The major leaguers probably pay $100 or more for a bat, to make sure it’s made with that special wood they believe will generate more homeruns, to say nothing of how it’s balanced, the thickness of the handle vs. the barrel, etc., etc. Yet another aspect of baseball that is not standard across the various players, despite the sports obsession with comparing statistics between them. Go figure…

But I digress. The reason these bats are special is because they’re instant collectors items. They gave out 18,000 of them today (to the first 18,000 fans 14 & under). Bat Day has been going on at Yankee Stadium for as long as I can remember (probably much longer than that), so I guess there are those out there who like to collect them.

It’s your basic “forced scarcity makes a market” thing…
