Top Al Qaeda Man Captured After Being Distracted by JonBenet Story

By Brian | August 17, 2006 | Share on Facebook

The Pakistani authorities that arrested Rashid Rauf (the London plane bomb plotter) have linked him to, and subsequently captured, Matiur Rehman – a senior Al Qaeda official who is in frequent contact with Osama Bin Laden’s right-hand man, Ayman al Zawahiri. They say Rehman met with Rauf just before the London plot was foiled.

So, four thoughts:

1) Someone ought to tell Bill Clinton it’s OK to link the London bomb plot to Al Qaeda now

2) Thank goodness the British government was tapping the phones of the people Rauf’s cohort called to order the attack

3) Good for Rehman – now that he’s in our custody, he’ll enjoy a full array of civil rights, including a federally provided Koran and three square meals a day. Wouldn’t want to see anything bad happen to a nice guy like that…

4) Too bad this will dominate the headlines and remove from Page 1 important stories like the confession of a man who claims to have killed a six-year old in Colorado ten years ago…

Hey, wow, have we nabbed yet another number two guy?

No, wait, this is a big deal because he’s linked to two other guys. So I’m guessing the best he can be is number three.

    Two questions:

    1) Do you have any documentation for points 2 and 3, or did you just make that up?

    2) Have you ever heard of the ABC News terrorism expert who provided the bullshit quote to make this guy sound very important, which was in complete contradiction of all known evidence of how al-Qaeda operates? Because I haven’t.

    1) Point #2 is from this article, which I originally linked to in this post. Point #3 is just a snarky comment about what our prisoners get at Guantanamo Bay (Koran & religion-compatible meals). Spare me the human rights accusations about that place – I was being ironical…

    2) Nope, never heard of him (or the Nixon Center, for that matter). And while I can’t imagine a scenario where capturing this guy is a bad thing, the point of the post was really the opposite of the point you’re implying here: no one is hyping this up to be a big deal. In fact, it’s buried in the deep depths of my news feed, whereas the guy who’s probably lying about killing a 6-year old girl ten years ago is the top story…
