I guarantee you that you’re going to watch this video twice:

I was right, wasn’t I?

Yes, you were right. Still, I disagree with the parallels being drawn here. Counting fast-moving objects of specific color is not a commonplace activity that one can perform subconsciously, and it clearly requires mentally blocking out anything that is not of that color. Were the bear polar, it might have registered…

I didn’t think of it as a test of skill so much, as a reason to discount eye witness accounts. Picture this scenario:

Lawyer: Ma’am, you say you saw the car accident happen in broad daylight. Can you tell us, please, was there a man in a bear suit doing the moonwalk next to the car when the accident occurred?

Witness: No. I’m sure I’d have seen it if it was there…

And I would have no reason to disbelieve the witness, unless there was also:

Lawyer: What were you doing at the time?

Witness: Why, right before that all happened, someone asked me out of the blue to keep the exact count of the passerbys who were wearing pink-ribbon hats… He said it was a test, and I was doing my best to ace it.

I just cannot believe that without being forcefully distracted by a task that requires focus, you would miss something that is obviously out of place…

If there is a similar test that instructs simply “Watch the video”, and people still miss the incongruity, then I would be convinced…
