Jason Lezak Enables NBC to Continue Hyping Michael Phelps

By Brian | August 11, 2008 | Share on Facebook

I’m not what you’d call a swimming fan, watching the sport only during the Summer Olympics, but what Jason Lezak did yesterday (last night? this morning? the timezones here are confusing enough to drive Doctor Who insane) was amazing regardless of whether you’re a fan or not.

Phelps’s quest is the story of the games, like it or not. Even British media shows little restraint in hyping that – I would not expect anything less of the American outfits…

I got thrown off by your last paragraph a bit. Yes, both guys got gold medals for the relay. But wasn’t the point of Lauer’s comment that Phelps – and the media that can continue hyping Phelps’s quest – now owes Lezak something extra for that? “Fruit basket” was a silly metaphor, I assume… Unless your point is that Phelps has to sign his own medal over to Lezak…

I guess you could interpret it that way. My point is that Lezak is racing for himself and for his team, not for Phelps.

Lauer’s comment just exemplifies what, in my mind, is the media’s foregone conclusion that everyone’s goal here is to get Phelps his eight medals. I took it to mean, “Lezak did a great job getting Phelps his medal in that race – he should be rewarded.” As if Lauer had forgotten that Lezak did get rewarded for the race, in that he received his own medal.

I would argue that in the context of a team effort, one performs for each of his/her teammates just as much as one performs for oneself, but that would be getting off-track from your main point.

Which, I believe, is that the media is being asinine by not celebrating Lezak for his heroic performance on its own merits. And in that, I am in a complete agreement with you.
