After the Beep, Please Send E-mail

By Brian | April 9, 2009 | Share on Facebook

The New York Times ran an interesting article last week about the impending obsolescence of voice mail. Some quotes:

Over 30 percent of voice messages linger unheard for three days or longer and that more than 20 percent of people with messages in their mailboxes

You should have asked — I was a GrandCentral user, so I’ve been on Google Voice for a few weeks. Short answer: voice message transcription is fantastic. Even better: blocking spam callers.

Re the simultaneous thing: I think the idea is that what’s simultaneous to humans isn’t simultaneous to the switch. Whoever is first gets the call. It can then be transferred to another phone, but I don’t think the service is really set up for two people, two phones — however, there might be a three-way option in that case which I’m not aware of.

Controlling it is *very* easy — there’s a control panel which you can access from a cell phone browser for on-the-fly settings, and there’s a heck of a lot you can do in advance so you don’t need to change things on the fly.

    Any other questions?
