Proud? Yes, but…

I knew that when Barack Obama was elected President of the United States, there would be a great deal of excitement in the country.

Nicely done, Brian. I don’t disagree with any of it.

But of course, me being me, I do have some further thoughts, if you’re interested:

It took me a little while for me to figure out what bothered me about this post, and I’m still noodling on it — which is to say, while there’s not much here I disagree with, it’s also not a sentiment I’d ever express myself.

The closest I’ve come up with so far: while it’s true that there have been many successful African-Americans across a wide range of fields, none of them were submitted to a national referendum in order to determine their success.

Beyond that, I’m not sure you’re correct that there was some arbitrary and missed moment where America was collectively ready to do this. If there was, it was impossible to tell until this candidate was elected. Personally, I think it’s probably in part true that the moment occurred last week because of who Obama is, and that prior to his candidacy many people who might have hesitated before would never have asked themselves the question.

I don’t see this as lessening what has gone before; I see it as augmenting it.

Well, the alternative is electing someone solely because he’s black, which strikes me as ludicrous.
