Brain Celebri-teasers: Week #3

By Brian | January 17, 2011

Welcome back to Brain Celebri-teasers. This is Week #3. Here’s this week’s puzzle:

Week #3
Category:Politics
Difficulty:Easy
Clue:For a while, these two women shared a twin billing in Washington

Week #3 introduces a new category – Politics, but returns to the “Easy” difficulty level. Only one point for the winner, but don’t slack off – every point will count as we approach the end of the year!

Remember – the solution will be posted on Thursday, so you have 3-4 days to guess. Put your answer in the comments section – first comment (by timestamp) wins.

Now that the contest is over, you can click here to see the answer.

Good luck!

Brain Celebri-teasers: Solution

By Brian | January 13, 2011

Welcome back to Brain Celebri-teasers. It’s time to reveal the solution to our Week #2 puzzle:

Week #2
Category:Music
Difficulty:Medium
Clue:For many, these two ladies represent the country’s best…
Answer:Taylor Swift &
Carrie Underwood
Both Taylor and Carrie have won Best Artist honors at the Country Music Awards, making them the “country’s best,” as it said in the clue. Carrie, of course, also won the top prize on American Idol, so she’s been the country’s best in that sense as well.

The winner this week was Ilya!

It’s occurring to me, two weeks in, that multiple people are getting the puzzle right each week. And while there should be a prize for being first, correct answers should be recognized. So, I’m tweaking the standings a little to reflect both points and correct answers. Don’t worry, though – at the end of the year, most points still wins!

So, that being said, after two weeks, the standings are as follows:

PlayerPointsCorrect Answers
Ilya22
Mike11
Jim01
Jeff Porten01
Konstantin01
Jason00

Thanks for playing, everyone! Remember to check back on Monday for next week’s puzzle!

Brain Celebri-teasers: Week #2

By Brian | January 10, 2011

Welcome back to Brain Celebri-teasers. This is Week #2. Here’s this week’s puzzle:

Week #2
Category:Music
Difficulty:Medium
Clue:For many, these two ladies represent the country’s best…

OK, so in Week #2, we’re moving up to our first Medium difficulty puzzle. Obviously, the difficulty levels are subjective, but I’m trying to define “Medium” as a puzzle in which one of the two people may be fairly obvious, but the other may be harder to figure out. Because it’s harder, two points will be awarded to the commenter with the first correct response…

Remember – the solution will be posted on Thursday, so you have 3-4 days to guess. Put your answer in the comments section – first comment (by timestamp) wins.

Now that the contest is over, you can click here to see the answer.

Good luck!

The Young Trumpet Player Within the Crowd

By Brian | January 7, 2011

Continuing my recent tradition of having very little to say and instead filling space with pictures, I present this (predominantly for my Penn friends). Can you spot the ten-year old amongst the slew of college students? Makes a father proud, it does…

(No? Try clicking on the picture to make it bigger!)

Two notes:
First: his brother, who also makes his father proud, was below and to the right of the frame, teaching himself the drum parts to all the Penn songs (age 8).

Second: the Penn Band Sousaphones rock…

Brain Celebri-teasers: Solution

By Brian | January 6, 2011

Welcome back to Brain Celebri-teasers. It’s time to reveal the solution to our Week #1 puzzle:

Practice Week #2
Category:Sports
Difficulty: Easy
Clue:These two guys were known throughout the sports world for their biting commentary
Answer:Muhammad Ali &
Mike Tyson
Muhammad Ali was as famous for sparring with the likes of Howard Cosell as he was for his boxing in the ring. He was, after all, “The Greatest,” and was never shy about saying so. Mike Tyson, on the other hand, was more known for commentary about biting, rather than “biting commentary,” per se. Just ask Evander Holyfield.

The winner this week was Mike!

After one week, the standings are, well, rather straight forward:

Mike1
4 Others0

Thanks for playing, everyone! Remember to check back on Monday for next week’s puzzle!

Brain Celebri-teasers: Solution – Practice Round #2

By Brian | December 30, 2010

Welcome back to Brain Celebri-teasers. It’s time to reveal the answer to this, our second practice round before the contest begins in earnest in 2011.

Practice Week #2
Category:Movies/TV
Difficulty: Easy
Clue:Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good (and clear) night
Answer:Santa Claus &
Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer
OK, so this was a little cheesy (and a little claymated). But what do you expect? It’s just a practice round. The real fun starts next week. ;-)

Under normal circumstances, this is where I’d post the winner’s name and the current standings, but since last week’s game included an immediate answer reveal, and this week is still practice, we’re not keeping score just yet.

But next week, it’s on. Oh yeah, it’s on…

Announcing Brain Celebri-teasers!

By Brian | December 20, 2010

Ladies and Gentlemen, an announcement: I’ve finally found a way to combine my desire to get better at Photoshop with my goal of posting regular updates to my blog. In other words, I’m starting a web contest!

The contest is called Brain Celebri-teasers and here’s how it works:

Early on each Monday in 2011, I will post a picture which combines two famous faces. The people involved will be drawn (no pun intended) from one of four categories: Politics, Movies/TV, Sports, or Music. Each week, I will announce the category, the difficulty level (Easy, Medium, Hard) and provide a brief clue. Readers will be asked to post their answers in the comments section on that post, and the first comment (as determined by timestamp) will be declared that week’s winner. The winner will receive one point for answering an easy puzzle, two points for a medium puzzle, and three points for a hard puzzle. Standings will be kept and a winner will be announced at the end of the year.

To make it a little more convenient, I will put a page break in the post just after the picture, so if you come directly to I Should Be Sleeping each Monday, you won’t be in danger of reading someone else’s answer in the comments. RSS readers will also be well protected. If you’re coming from elsewhere (e.g., from Facebook), though, you’ll just have to control yourself and not look at others’ answers while you’re thinking about your own (I recommend strategic use of the scroll bars).

Of course, just because there are answers down there doesn’t mean they’re right! I will announce the answer and that week’s winner on each Thursday, so I encourage everyone to play even after the guesses start to roll in. Heck – there are no prizes involved here, so playing is just as much fun even if you don’t win, right?

Anyway, seeing as how today is Monday, let’s do an example (I’ll post another example next Monday as well, and then we’ll be into the real contest after the New Year). Here we go:

Practice Week #1
Category: Politics
Difficulty: Easy
Clue: This couple made big news organizing the community of Washington, DC

Got your guess? Ready to post to the comments section? OK, great – click through the break to see the answer (since this is a practice round, I’ll reveal the answer right away. Normally, you’d have to wait until Thursday).
